Gebruikers van Apple Mail in Mac OS X 10.5 en 10.6 kennen vermoedelijk de ‘data detectors’ die de tekst van je mail scannen op adressen, telefoonnummers, datum en tijd. Ga je met je cursor over een van deze items dan verschijnt er een gestippelde kader rond het item met een pijl aan de rechterzijde van dat kader om een contextueel menu aan te duiden. Klik je op dit menu dan kan je een nieuw contactpersoon aanmaken in je adresboek of een nieuw iCal-event in je agenda met de gegevens uit dat kader.
Wat velen niet weten is dat wanneer je op voorhand een selectie van tekst maakt in die mail om dan vervolgens de ‘data detector’ te gebruiken, de geselecteerde tekst mee gekopieerd wordt als ‘nota’ in het aangemaakte contact of iCal-event. Handig als je extra informatie uit die mail wenst mee te nemen in 1 beweging!

“Quick Look” of “Snelle Weergave” is een functie geïntroduceerd in Mac OS X 10.5 en verder ‘verfijnt’ in Mac OS X 10.6. Het laat je toe om onmiddellijk de inhoud van je documenten te bekijken zonder ze te openen. Je bladert door PDF’s, bekijkt foto’s en video’s op groot formaat en je kunt diavoorstellingen afspelen. Allemaal met één klik met je muis of 1 druk op je toetsenbord (spatiebalk). In Mac OS 10.6 – Snow Leopard werkt Quick Look nu ook in de “Open- en bewaar-dialoogvensters” én kan je via “alt-spatiebalk” onmiddellijk naar een ‘full screen’-weergave gaan.

Blue Crowbar Software is a small Belgian Mac development firm that is quickly making a name for itself for its innovative iPhoto and Aperture plugins. Blue Crowbar has announced a new iPhoto plugin for adding watermarks to pictures in your iPhoto library. If you’re worried that a watermark might ruin a perfectly good picture, don’t be. Impression makes a copy of the picture, then creates a watermarked version which is also saved into your iPhoto library.

Apple heeft deze week de versie van Apple Remote Desktop (ARD) naar 3.3 gebracht. Volgens de ‘release notes‘ zijn er redelijk wat ‘improvements’ onder andere het feit dat uitgevoerde ‘system shortcuts’ (Force Quit, cmd-Tab, cmd-shift-Q om uit te loggen) nu ook effectief uitgevoerd worden op de remote computer in plaats van op de lokale computer, en dit als je in ‘window’-mode werkt (in full screen was dit geen probleem).
Ik ben een ARD-gebruiker van het eerste uur, daar mijn werk onder andere het remote beheren van allerhande servers en computers omvat. Het werken met deze laatste versie loopt weer heel wat vlotter dus het updaten loont! Ik gebruik tegelijkertijd verschillende alternatieve programma’s (VNC, RDC, TeamViewer). ARD blijft mij de meest ‘afgewerkte’ oplossing bieden om computers op afstand te beheren en te ondersteunen, en omvat de meeste extra opties (zie ARD-info).
Dit is geen Apple nieuws maar toch een blik op de technologische toekomst. Een aanrader om deze video volledig te bekijken!
